Join me on a six-week journey to hone your skills and boost your confidence with the torch! We’ll review soldering basics and learn how to successfully combine them into more complex and interesting designs. Learn about fuels, fluxes, anti-fluxes and solder as well as types of joints, sweat soldering, bezels, hollow forms and more. We’ll focus on technique, creative set-ups and making samples. Learn tips and tricks in a supportive and encouraging environment. All skill levels are welcome, but basic skills are required.

We will discuss several types of torches, including Butane, Propane/Air and Acetylene/Air. Students will be able to participate using their preferred fuel source.

Enjoy a birds-eye view through a series of pre-recorded videos, Zoom Demos and Q&A. You’ll create a variety of samples and learn to combine basic techniques into more complex projects.

  • how to set up a safe soldering area

  • how to choose a soldering surface

  • how to choose a torch type, pros and cons

  • how to choose a flux or an anti-flux

  • how to safely use and store chemicals

  • wire solder vs paste solder and methods of application

  • review of basic soldering joints

  • creative ways to hold your work

  • how to combine soldering techniques

  • how to file, sand, buff and polish

  • options to set-up a basic extraction system at home

  • lots of tips and tricks!

** Once registered, you’ll receive an invitation to join a Private Facebook Group two days before our first meeting where you’ll have access to the pre-recorded demonstration of the lessons for Week 1. We’ll meet for 1.5 hours on Tuesdays for 6 weeks via Zoom for follow-up and Q&A. New lessons will be posted by Fridays for the following week. In our private group, students can ask questions and share photos/videos of their work in progress. You’ll have 24/7 access to all the recorded demos for two months after the last class session. If you would prefer not to join the interactive FB group, there is an alternate (non-interactive) option to view videos via Google Drive. Please let me know if you’d prefer Google when you register.

Once registered for the class, you’ll receive a more detailed tools/supplies list with suppliers/order numbers and any applicable discount codes.

Please Note:

There are quite a few products, tools and techniques covered in this class, including fuels, soldering surfaces and fluxes. To allow students to choose which items they’d like to explore, the Basic Materials List below includes only the minimum of tools and materials needed to complete the basic projects in this class. These tools and materials will be used throughout the entire class session. A more detailed and specialized tools and materials lists will be provided once you have registered for the class.

Basic Materials Needed:

Torch (butane, propane/air, acetylene/air), a safe basic soldering set-up (soldering pad, picks, tweezers, etc.), paste flux, glass or metal quenching pans, pickle pot, copper, brass and/or sterling silver sheet, wire and tubing, silver wire solder, paste solder, basic hand tools, metal shear, scissors, etc., dapping set, jewelers saw and blades, wax, bench pin, magnification, files, sandpaper, finishing consumables, drill bits
